Frequently Asked Questions
Installation and first use
Q: Cannot find shortcut or executable file in start menu. Where is the program?
A: SDExplorer is not a stand-alone application, so it does not have the executable file. It is a Windows Explorer extension. Please look at this small video tutorial how to install and launch SDExplorer.
Q: How do I know which version of SDExplorer I'm running?
A: Please look at this small video tutorial how to determine SDExplorer's build number.
Q: SDExplorer items are not showing in the left Explorer pane
A: Open the "Tools -> Folder Option" menu item.
Make sure that checkbox "Show all folders" is selected
Q: I use a proxy. When I try to log in to SDExplorer nothing happens.
A: You need to configure your Microsoft Internet Explorer to use a proxy server, because the Live ID authentication dialog works only via predefined proxy settings in IE.
Q: I have just created an MSN account and I can't get access to SkyDrive storage from SDE.
A: If you have never used the SkyDrive service, you need first to activate it via the web interface here.
Q: When I click on the SDExplorer icon, I do not get a prompt for user name and password. No files or folders are listed. Am I missing something?
A: First of all, make sure that you have installed the latest build of the SDExplorer. If not, upgrade it and try to log in again. If it doesn't help, please contact us, stating the SDExplorer build number and OS version.
Q: Can you add a check, so that when I copy files to a Skydrive folder, it only copies files that do not exist in the target skydrive folder?
A: This feature was added in SDExplorer Advanced Edition. Please check the version you have installed and upgrade it if needed.
Now, before uploading, SDExplorer will check the target folder and if any conflicts are detected, you will see the dialog box shown in the picture below.
Q: Is there any way to see the files that are shared with me in SDExplorer?
- Find the "Browse a public account" toolbar button.
- Select the item marked with a green arrow at the wizard page.
You should see all folders and files that are shared with you in Skydrive.
Q: How can I browse a SkyDrive account of my friend using SDExplorer?

Q: How can I browse a SkyDrive account of my Live Group using SDExplorer?
Starting from the version 3.0 of SDExplorer Advanced a new feature is added: the support for SkyDrive accounts in Windows Live Groups. You can read more about Windows Live Groups at the official site. Create groups, invite members or receive invitations to other groups sent by your friends and use free online data storage cooperatively in each group: create, copy, edit or save documents and photos with SDExplorer.
To start working with groups click the "Windows Live Groups" command on the toolbar. If you don't have any groups yet, you should see the following window:
If your Live account is already associated with some groups (either you are the owner or a member of a group), the contents of the window will be the following:
To start browsing of shared group files, open the corresponding group header and click the "View documents/View photos" link. SDExplorer remembers your choice, so on subsequent runs of SDExplorer you will find associated SkyDrive files of this group already in the view mode.
To exit the group view mode and start browsing of your own account or to see files from other groups open the "Windows Live Groups" window again. After that, either click the link in the upper right corner, or choose the "Sign out" link in the properties of the active group. To work with document of another group, click the "View documents/View photos" link of that group.
The currently browsed group is marked with a green button in the group header, near the group name. You can also send a message to all group members by clicking the corresponding link in the group properties.
Other users can send you an invitation to join the group if you have allowed receiving such messages in your profile. If you have unread invitations, you will see the following notification (see the picture below)
Note: the current version of SDExplorer Advanced cannot create groups or send invitations to join a group. To manage groups you should use the standard web-interface of Windows Live. However, to make managing groups a bit easier, SDExplorer Advanced already contains links that allow opening appropriate pages in your browser with a single click.
Q: Why I can't copy a 400 MB file to my SkyDrive account?
A: The SkyDrive service currently offers free personal storage, with individual files limited to 300 MB. However, you can use the Advanced edition of SDExplorer that does not limit the largest file size that can be uploaded to SkyDrive.
Q: I selected my preferred language in the Language dialog, but after restarting SDE, the interface language was not changed. What should I do?
A: You need to clear cookies in your web browser. If your browser is IE, you can read about how to do so in this Microsoft support article.
Q: How can I assign a drive letter to my SkyDrive folder and back up my documents?
ATTENTION. This FAQ entry is not valid any more. Please see the details here.
- Select the item "Map Network Drive..." after right-clicking on the folder you want to map.
- Specify the drive letter you want to assign to the folder.
- Wait a little bit, as the connection process may take some time. The mapped drive is ready now.
- You can unmount the mapped folder at any time by choosing the menu item "Disconnect Network Drive..."
Q: How do I enable the update availability detection function?
A: While installing SDExplorer, enable the "Automatically check for the latest update" option on the "Program Updates" page of the wizard.
Q: How can I enable this function if I did not check this box while installing SDExplorer?
A: Two options are available:
- Check the box while installing a newer version.
- Use the registry editor (regedit.exe) to find the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SkyDriveExplorer key and change the value of the AutoUpdate parameter to 1.
Q: Does SDExplorer download and install new versions automatically?
A: No, when a new version becomes available, SDExplorer shows a popup window with a notification text and a description of the changes in the updated version. You can proceed to installing the new version by clicking a corresponding link in the popup window.
Q: Is there any chance of having SDE made available for Mac OS X?
A: We currently do not have plans to port the application to the Mac platform.
